‘Shall the true Messiah see’

The curious story of Handel’s great masterpiece

Great Comp Music Festival, Great Comp, St Mary’s Platt, Borough Green, Kent TN15 8QS

Sunday 16th July 2017 at 11.00 am

Music lovers are often surprised – shocked, even – that there is no definitive version of Handel’s Messiah.  This is because with each major performance that the composer mounted during the 1740s and 50s, he subtracted, added or rewrote existing numbers in order to pacify the whims of his librettist, or to reflect the vocal abilities of singers new to a production.  With his team of musicians, Peter Medhurst explores the history, the sources, and the various versions of the world’s most famous piece of choral music in order to reveal the essence of the true Handel Messiah.
