Lewis Carroll is the nom de plume of Charles Dodgson (1832-98), who is best known as the author of two immensely successful children’s books: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass (1871). However, there is far more to the writer than meets the eye and a little delving reveals that he was an expert writer on mathematics, an inventor of games (including an early form of Scrabble), a designer of a device for helping a bedridden invalid to read from a sideways placed book, a creator of ciphers for cryptography, and a first class amateur photographer. The lecture is an overview of Lewis Carroll’s life and his remarkable achievements.
