Written in 1826 when Felix Mendelssohn was only 17 years old, the overture A Midsummer Night’s Dream is always regarded as the first great ‘concert’ overture of the 19th century. However, while the work is Romantic and programmatic in element, it also contains many features that link it to the classicism of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, and it is the fusion of these elements that makes the music so striking and charming. The lecture explores A Midsummer Night’s Dream, as well as another magnificent, youthful overture, Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage – a much overlooked masterpiece.
