Introduction
The pre-Christmas celebrations in Vienna are among the most select and atmospheric in the world, where the many Christmas markets, iconic cafes and seasonal displays bring festive spirit at every street corner. From our centrally placed hotel, with its old-world charm, we explore the rich vein of Viennese culture, taking in key moments of its music, its art and its architecture. This is the perfect tour for a little pre-Christmas indulgence!
Itinerary
Day 1
Our early morning flight with British Airways takes us direct from London Heathrow to Vienna. On arrival, we are met by Tom Abbott, art historian and tour manager, who transfers us by executive coach to our hotel – the 4* Hotel König von Ungarn – situated in the heart of old Vienna. After a light lunch, we walk along Kärntner Straße to Mythos Mozart, Vienna’s new Mozart experience. The display is housed in a building constructed on the site where Mozart died in 1791 and uses the latest high-tech to immerse the visitor in Mozart’s life and music.
On our way back, there is time to explore the Cathedral’s Christmas Market, which is only a step or two away from our hotel. After check-in, and some time to freshen up, we enjoy a welcome dinner at a nearby local restaurant.
Day 2
Today we have a study morning in the concert hall of the Figaro House, where Mozart wrote his famous opera. Here Peter discusses and plays on the Bösendorfer piano a range of compositions that hail from the Golden Age of Viennese music, the period of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert. This is followed by lunch and a visit to the Leopold Museum, which houses some of the world’s most important Austrian artwork. The collection spans the 19th and 20th centuries and was assembled by Rudolf and Elisabeth Leopold, who invested in works by Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt and their contemporaries at a time when these artists were considered unfashionable. The evening is at leisure, or people may wish to attend an opera or concert or enjoy a stroll and a glass of Glühwein in one of the Christmas markets.
Day 3
Peter’s lecture this morning tells the story of the famous piano competition between Mozart and Muzio Clementi, held at the Viennese Court, on Christmas Eve, 1781. We then walk to the Museum of Musical Instruments in the Neue Burg wing of the Hofburg, which houses – among others – pianos played by Mozart, Liszt and Brahms. After lunch, We are guided through the Kunsthistorisches Museum art collection to view some of the gallery’s many Christmas themed paintings. These include Hans von Kulmbach’s ‘Annunciation’, Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s ‘Hunters in the Snow’ and Jacob Jordaen’s ‘Twelfth Night’ (the Bean King). We then have free time to wander through the Christmas market located in front of the gallery. The evening is at leisure, or people may wish to attend an opera or concert.
Day 4
After Peter’s morning lecture, which today focuses on the music of the famous Strauss family, we make our way to Sacher’s Hotel for a light lunch, which includes a slice of Sacher’s famous Torte. The hotel has a musical connection, in that it was built on the site of the house where Antonio Vivaldi died in July 1741. We then walk around the corner – literally – to the Vienna State Opera for a behind the scenes tour of the theatre.
We follow this with a stroll through the New Dimensions Museum, dedicated to the life and memory of Johann Strauss. After a reviving coffee/tea break we descend on the Secession Building, which houses the famous Beethoven frieze painted by Gustav Klimt in 1901.
Finally, we round off the afternoon with a stroll through the Town Hall Christmas Market. The evening is at leisure.
Day 5
Following on from yesterday’s lecture, this morning’s talk tells the story of the New Year concerts in Vienna, which have been running in the familiar format since 1939. Afterwards, we visit the Hofburg Palace to view the fine collection of riches housed in the Imperial Treasury. On show are secular and religious artifacts covering over 1,000 years of European history, and among items on display are the Imperial Crown, Orb and Sceptre of Austria, as well as the Imperial Crown of the Holy Roman Empire. En route to the palace, Peter gives an organ recital of Christmas music in a nearby church. After lunch in a nearby restaurant, the remainder of the afternoon is at leisure, allowing time for Christmas shopping. This evening, we have a farewell drinks reception at the hotel, followed by dinner in a carefully selected restaurant.
Day 6
After checkout has been completed at the hotel, our programme’s magnificent finale is a private tour of the Liechtenstein Garden Palace located in the 9th district of Vienna. The Liechtenstein family possesses some of the finest European art in the world, including works by Rubens, Raphael, Rembrandt, and other masters from the early Renaissance to the High Baroque.
The Palace was conceived by Prince Andreas I von Liechtenstein as the family’s summer residence, and was built in the early 18th century to designs by the architects Johann von Erlach, Rossi, and Martinelli. After lunch we transfer to Vienna Airport for our flight back to London Heathrow.
The Hotel
We stay for five nights at the 4* Hotel König von Ungarn (www.kvu.at), one of the oldest hotels in Vienna. Located just behind St Stephen’s Cathedral, facilities at the hotel include a restaurant and a bar. All rooms are en-suite and feature television, telephone, hairdryer, mini bar and an in room safe. Dinner is included in a nearby restaurant on the first and last evenings of our tour. The remaining three nights are on bed and breakfast basis.
One of the unexpected delights of the hotel is that it forms part of of the so-called Figaro House, where Mozart lived in the mid 1780s, and the hotel’s dining room is situated immediately beneath Mozart’s apartment (see photograph below).
