Despite a false start as a reluctant underwriter at Lloyd’s of London, the young Hubert Parry (1848-1918) was directed finally by George Grove to his true calling in life: that of musician, composer, teacher and insighted writer on musical matters.
Today, Parry is best remembered for his rousing setting of William Blake’s poem Jerusalem, but his contribution to the repertoire of top-notch English compositions goes far beyond hymn writing, and includes symphonies, concertos, sonatas, choral works, chamber music, Christmas carols, an opera, and even an elegy for Johannes Brahms. He also wrote a study of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, which is still worth the reading.
