It is in the second chapter of St Luke’s gospel that we learn about the famous shepherds, who at the time of Christ’s birth, kept watch over their flocks by night. However, leading the life of a shepherd in 1st century Palestine was not considered to be upwardly mobile as an occupation, in fact the reverse, and because of the nature of their work, Jewish leaders often criticised shepherds for ignoring the rules of their religion.
This seasonal lecture explores the information we have of the men who are such an integral part of the Christmas story, and goes on to explore the rich legacy that their brief – but potent – appearance has had on music and the arts down the centuries
