When the composer Joseph Haydn was approaching his 60th year, Peter Salomon – a German violinist and entrepreneur working in England – invited him to come to London to compose and direct a series of large scale works, including six symphonies. With time on his hands, Haydn accepted the invitation, and so embarked on one of the most rewarding moments of his entire career.
Within a few months of his arrival, Haydn was presented with an honorary doctorate at Oxford University and this lecture tells the story of the remarkable events that led up to, and took place, in Oxford, between the 5th and 7th July, 1791.
