Depending on whom you talk to, The Isle of the Dead is either a painting by the Swiss German artist Arnold Böcklin, or a musical tone poem by Sergei Rachmaninov. In fact, it is both, since in 1907, Rachmaninov was inspired to write his great masterpiece after seeing a black and white reproduction of Böcklin’s painting in a book, in a Parisian hotel room.
The lecture looks at both painting and tone poem, to explore the ingenious way in which the Russian composer responds to the sombre and thought provoking subject matter.
