In 1563, Sir James Melville, the Scottish ambassador, heard Queen of England play on the virginals (a keyboard instrument belonging to the harpsichord family) and remarked that she played ‘excellently well’. Elizabeth 1st was one of many high born women (others include Mary Queen of Scots, Anne Boleyn and her sister Mary, Elizabeth of Bohemia) who played the instrument for a variety of social, dynastic and political reasons.
The lecture looks at the wealth of music and stories associated with the Renaissance and early Baroque instrument, as well as exploring its appearance in the paintings of Gabriel Metsu, Jan Steen and Johannes Vermeer.
