The vanitas, along with the memento mori, reminds the beholder of the ephemeral nature of man’s existence, and has long been a popular – but sobering – theme in the world of art. Ripe fruit, skulls, seashells, flowers, spent candles, mirrors, dice, and dust, are all familiar images that reflect the passing of time.
However, it could be argued that it is music which best portrays the fleeting moment, since by its nature, music exists in time and not in space; for no sooner is a musical phrase sounded, than it vanishes into nothingness and is lost forever. This lecture explores the visual and aural themes of the vanitas to reflect the spirit of the ensuing days: Halloween, All Hallows and All Souls.
