From the moment it was commissioned in the summer of 1791, WA Mozart’s Requiem Mass in D minor has been the subject of mystery and intrigue. Furthermore, by the time of his death on 5th December 1791, Mozart had only completed the Introitus and Kyrie, and sketched the Sequentia and Offertorium, leaving the Sanctus, Benedictus, Agnus Dei and Communio uncomposed.
However, enough of Mozart’s music survives for it to be placed among his finest works. The study afternoon looks at the curious background to the Requiem, and discusses the extraordinary vision that Mozart brought to his final masterpiece.
