Mozart’s Don Giovanni of 1787 was written at a time of great social, political, and economic unrest, when enlightenment thinking gave way to subjective, irrational and emotional thought.
The opera brims with the macabre, from the shocking and violent chords at the start of the overture, to the eerie graveyard scene, and the arrival of a demon chorus in the closing moments of the opera. However, what truly drives the drama forward is Mozart’s magnificent score, thrilling, creepy and visionary from start to finish – a true gothick opera.
