Given the many times it appears in the concert hall, or is heard on the radio, Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition may be regarded as the most famous piece of music in the world. Written in 1874 for solo piano, Pictures has attracted musical arrangements by Henry Wood, Maurice Ravel, Andrés Sergovia, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer, to name but a few.
The study afternoon discusses the originality and inventiveness of the music, and looks at some of the pictures by Viktor Hartmann, which inspired the score.
