Despite the brevity of his life, Henry Purcell (1659-95) was one of the most important figures of the late musical Baroque, a fine English composer who could turn his hand to any musical form, whether it be a short 16-bar harpsichord piece or a largescale vocal work for the church, the court or the theatre.
The study afternoon homes in on Purcell’s life and his distinctive musical style, and goes on to consider the impact that the composer had on later generations of musicians, including Handel, Haydn, Tippett and Britten.
