Despite writing many largescale works, including four symphonies, a piano concerto and some monumental choral pieces, Robert Schumann (1810-56) was, arguably, never more at home than when composing for the intimacy of the salon. This is particularly the case with his 16 vocal settings of Heinrich Heine’s Lyrisches Intermezzo, better known as the song cycle Dichterliebe, of 1840.
The insightedness of Schumann’s music and the depth of feeling and expression in every phrase, is a marvel of Romantic expression, and the two linked study afternoons will allow time to savour the nuances of this truly great masterpiece.
